“Women's Rights Convention”

Sojourner Truth

One of the most unique and interesting speeches of the Convention was made by Sojourner Truth, an emancipated slave. It is impossible to transfer it to paper, or convey any adequate idea of the effect it produced upon the audience. Those only can appreciate it who saw her powerful form, her whole-souled, earnest gestures, and listened to her strong and truthful tones. She came forward to the platform and addressing the President said with great simplicity:

May I say a few words? Receiving an affirmative answer, she proceeded; I want to say a few words about this matter. I am a woman's rights. I have as much muscle as any man, and can do as much work as any man. I have plowed and reaped and husked and chopped and mowed, and can any man do more than that? I have heard much about the sexes being equal; I can carry as much as any man, and can eat as much too, if I can get it. I am as strong as any man that is now. As for intellect, all I can say is, if woman have a pint and man a quart why can’t she have her little pint full? You need not be afraid to give us our rights for fear we will take too much,--for we can’t take more than our pint’ll hold. The poor men seem to be all in confusion, and don’t know what to do. Why children, if you have woman's rights give it to her and you will feel better. You will have your own rights, and they wont be so much trouble. I cant read, but I can hear. I have heard the bible and have learned that Eve caused man to sin. Well if woman upset the world, do give her a chance to set it right side up again. The Lady has spoken about Jesus, how he never spurned woman from him, and she was right. When Lazarus died, Mary and Martha came to him with faith and love and besought him to raise their brother. And Jesus wept--and Lazarus came forth. And how came Jesus into the world? Through God who created him and woman who bore him. Man, where is your part? But the women are coming up blessed be God and a few of the men are coming up with them. But man is in a tight place, the poor slave is on him, woman is coming on him, and he is surely between -- a hawk and a buzzard.

Uno de los discursos de la Convención más sobresaliente e interesante fue el de Sojourner Truth, una mujer esclavizada liberada. Es imposible trasladarlo al papel, u ofrecer una idea ajustada del efecto que tuvo en el público. Sólo pudieron apreciarlo quienes vieron su ponderosa figura, sus gestos al expresarse con el alma y toda la pasión del entendimiento, y escucharon el énfasis y la honestidad de su forma de hablar. Subió a la plataforma y dirigiéndose a la Presidenta dijo con un lenguaje fácilmente comprensible:

¿Me permiten decir unas palabras? Al recibir una respuesta afirmativa, procedió: "Deseo decir unas palabras sobre esta cuestión. Soy defensora de los derechos de la mujer. Tengo tanto músculo como cualquier hombre, y puedo trabajar tanto como cualquier hombre. He arado y cosechado y aventado y usado el hacha y la guadaña... ¿Puede un hombre hacer más? He escuchado muchas cosas sobre la igualdad de los sexos: yo puedo cargar igual que un hombre, y puedo comer tanto como él, si lo consigo. Soy tan fuerte como cualquier hombre que está aquí. Y en relación al intelecto, solo decir que si una mujer tiene una pinta y un hombre un cuarto de galón, ¿por qué no puede tener ella su pinta llena? No deben temer que darnos nuestros derechos nos lleve a que tomemos demasiado pues no podemos tomar más de lo que cabe en nuestra pinta. Los pobres hombres se sienten confundidos y no saben qué hacer. Queridos niños, es que tenéis los derechos de la mujer, basta con que se los deis a ellas, así os sentiréis mejor. Quedaréis con vuestros derechos y ellas dejarán de ser un problema tan grave. No sé leer, pero sé escuchar. He escuchado la biblia y he sabido que Eva hizo que el hombre pecara. Bien, si la mujer puso el mundo patas arriba, déjenla reparar el daño. La dama ha hablado de Jesús, cómo nunca despreció a la mujer, y tiene razón. Cuando murió Lázaro, María y Marta se acercaron a él con fe y amor y le rogaron que resucitara a su hermano.  Y Jesús lloró, y Lázaro se levantó. ¿Y cómo llegó Jesús a este mundo? Dios lo creó y una mujer lo parió. Hombre, ¿qué papel tuviste tú? Las mujeres se están levantando, bendito sea Dios, y algunos hombres junto a ellas. Pero el Hombre se siente sin suficiente sitio: tiene encima al Esclavo, la Mujer se le está viniendo encima, sin duda se encuentra entre... el halcón y el busardo [no tiene escapatoria].
