When you mention the Indirect Object, this is, the person you are communicating with, you need to use "tell".
e.g. I told her you would be late.
When you don't, use "say".
e.g. I said (that) you would be late.
I told your brother (that) you would be late.
I said you would be late.
LA FAMOSA CANCIÓN "SAY YOU, SAY ME" NO SIGNIFICA "DITE, DIME", SIGNIFICA "PONGAMOS QUE TÚ, PONGAMOS QUE YO", POR LO QUE JAMÁS VERÉIS EL "SAY" SEGUIDO
DE UN PRONOMBRE QUE SEA SU OBJETO.
(En lenguaje oral podréis oír: "She said to me", pero como en el escrito no se admite mucho, y como en cualquier caso, hay que aprender lo más común

Tell us about the other day = Cuéntanos lo del otro día / Háblanos del otro día.
Tell me about yourself = Cuéntame cosas de ti / Háblame de ti.
I'm going to tell you a story/joke = Os voy a contar una historia/chiste.
